Introduction
A recent article that ran on the AP wire reviewed current heartburn treatments (including medications and surgery) and the potential for acid reflux to increase the risk of a rare type of cancer in the esophagus. This article has some people questioning their heartburn treatments. As a recognized organization that provides education and a community of support for heartburn sufferers, the National Heartburn Alliance (NHBA) would like to reiterate that while heartburn affects more than 100 million Americans each month, not all heartburn is equal and not all Americans suffer to the same degree. Therefore, NHBA wants consumers to know that the existing heartburn treatment medications are safe. However, NHBA encourages heartburn sufferers to consult health care professionals to evaluate the symptoms and determine which treatment is most appropriate.
Introduction
NHBA Board members have developed answers to a series of frequently asked questions about heartburn. The questions and answers are listed under the following categories:

Please note that the information provided by our experts is general in nature and is intended to educate you about heartburn and its management. It should not take the place of consultations with your health care professional because numerous other health factors may exist in your case that are not addressed by these questions and answers.
Even if you find the answer to your question we encourage you to discuss your medical condition with a health professional. It's best to maintain ongoing contact with your health care professional and always remember to share the use of any over-the-counter (OTC) medications as well as complementary or alternative medications such as dietary supplements and/or herbal remedies.
